Match the disc to the material

Diamond for stone, tile and glass. HSS for wood and soft metal. Bonded abrasive for cutting steel. Using the wrong one is how discs shatter — a bonded abrasive disc used on wood, or an HSS blade used on masonry, will fail.

Safety — the small discs are the dangerous ones

Bonded abrasive cut-off discs shatter as their normal failure mode, and fragments from a small disc at high RPM travel fast. Wear impact-rated eye protection, and a face shield if you can.

Never exceed a disc's rated speed. Do not use a cracked or chipped disc, do not use a cutting disc for grinding, and never apply side pressure.

The little HSS circular blades have no guard. They grab and kick the tool sideways with no warning — clamp the workpiece and keep both hands on the tool.

Wear a dust mask. Cutting stone or tile dry produces respirable crystalline silica, which causes permanent lung disease.
