Run the drill in reverse when extracting. The extractor is left-hand threaded — it bites as it turns anticlockwise, which is the direction that also backs the screw out.
Go slowly and keep the extractor square. An extractor that snaps off inside the hole is far worse than the original problem, because hardened extractor steel cannot be drilled out.
Penetrating oil first, and a little heat on a seized bolt, make a real difference.
Check the extractor size range against your screw before ordering.
Wear eye protection — hardened extractors shatter rather than bend.
