The gold is plating over stainless steel, not solid gold. Stainless steel underneath is a good base — it does not rust and is generally well tolerated — but the plating will wear through with regular wear, particularly where the chain rubs.
Check the letter carefully in the product options before ordering. A personalised item cannot usually be exchanged for a different letter.
Keep it away from perfume, hairspray, chlorine and hand cream, all of which strip plating. Take it off before showering and swimming, and store it dry.
