Safety — tensioned wire is genuinely dangerous
Fence wire under tension stores a lot of energy. If it snaps or a fixing pulls out, it whips back at high speed. This causes serious facial and eye injuries every year, and barbed wire makes it far worse.
Wear eye protection and heavy gloves, and stand to the side of the wire, never in line with it — and never let anyone stand in line with it either.
Tension gradually and check the strainer post and fixings can take the load before pulling hard; a post that pulls out releases the whole run at once.
Barbed wire is restricted in some places where the public can reach it — check your local rules. Keep this tool and the wire away from children and livestock while working.
