Wire-bristle grill brushes shed bristles, and a swallowed bristle can perforate the throat or intestine. This has caused real injuries and emergency surgery, and health authorities in several countries have issued warnings about it.
Inspect the brush before every use and throw it away as soon as bristles are loose, bent or missing.
Always wipe the grate with a damp cloth or paper towel after brushing, and look over it before you put food on.
Do not use it on a cold, greasy grate — bristles catch and pull out. Brush while the grate is warm.
If you would rather avoid the risk entirely, a bristle-free coil brush, a wooden scraper or a ball of foil does the same job.
