Use — the colour coding is the useful part
Keep one sponge for wheels and never use it on paint. Brake dust is metallic and abrasive, and a wheel sponge used on a bonnet puts scratches in it. That is what the three colours are for.
For bugs, soak the area first with water or a bug remover and let it soften. Scrubbing dried-on insects is how paint gets marked — and bug residue is acidic and etches lacquer if it is left for weeks.
Care
Rinse the sponge constantly while washing, and drop it if it touches the ground — one piece of grit ruins a panel.
Machine wash them separately from ordinary laundry and never with fabric softener, which coats microfibre and stops it working. Air dry.
