Why a harness matters
A double harness spreads the load properly and lets you work far longer without back and shoulder strain. If you use a metal blade, a proper harness is not optional — a bike-handle machine with a blade must be run on a harness, because the harness is what lets you control the machine if it kicks back.
Safety
Adjust the harness so the machine balances at hip height and the cutting head sits just off the ground with your arms relaxed. A badly set harness makes the machine harder to control, not easier.
Know how to release it fast. Most harnesses have a quick-release; find it and practise before you start work. Being strapped to a running machine you cannot control is the situation the release exists for.
Check the webbing and stitching for wear before each use.
