Important — get the earth connection right
Clamp onto bare, clean metal. Paint, rust, oil or mill scale under the magnet gives a poor return, and a poor return causes arcing at the clamp, a bad weld, and heat where you do not want it.
Magnetic clamps are convenient but generally carry less current than a good screw clamp. On heavy welding, use a proper clamp.
Safety
Never run the welding return current through a vehicle's bodywork, bearings or electronics. Earth as close to the weld as possible — on a car, disconnect the battery first.
Standard welding precautions apply: proper welding helmet at the right shade, gloves, flame-resistant clothing, ventilation, and nothing flammable nearby. Keep the magnet away from cards, hard drives, pacemakers and mechanical watches.
