These are entry tools and they are regulated in many countries. In England and Wales, possession with intent to use them in connection with burglary or theft is an offence under the Theft Act 1968. What they will and will not do
A shim bypasses a simple spring latch only. It does nothing against a deadbolt, a deadlocking latch, a multipoint lock or any door that is actually locked rather than just pulled to.
Using one badly damages the door frame and the latch. If you are locked out of your own home, a locksmith is faster and cheaper than the damage.
