Use

Work up through the grits without skipping steps; a fine grit will not remove the scratches a coarse one left. Use a sanding block for anything flat — fingers leave dips.

For car paint, use it wet with a little soap in the water, and keep it moving. Sanding through the clear coat means a respray, not a polish, so go slowly and check often.

Safety

Wear eye protection and a dust mask when dry sanding. Do not dry sand old paintwork that may contain lead, and do not sand any material that may contain asbestos. Wet sanding keeps the dust down and is the safer option on paint.
