Spike aerating pushes soil sideways and compacts it rather than removing a core. On heavy clay it can make compaction worse. A hollow-tine (core) aerator is the tool that actually relieves compacted soil.
They work best on soft, damp soil. On dry ground the spikes barely go in.
Safety
Walking on spikes is unstable. Take short steps, do not use them on a slope or on hard ground, and do not wear them near a path, patio or road.
Check for buried cables, pipes and irrigation before you start.
