This is a safety component — treat it as one
Never run a trimmer or brush cutter without the guard fitted. The guard is what stops stones, glass and broken line reaching your legs and face, and it sets the maximum line length — running line longer than the guard's cut-off blade allows overloads the machine and throws debris further.
The guard for a line head and the guard for a metal blade are not the same part. If you run a metal blade, you need the blade guard specified for it.
Fit it securely and check it has not cracked before each use. A guard is not a substitute for eye protection, hearing protection, long trousers and stout boots.
