Before you order
Check the canister thread type against the gas you can buy locally — screw-thread and puncture-type are not interchangeable. Gas is not included and cannot be posted with the torch.
Butane alone struggles in the cold and on larger copper; propane or a MAPP-type gas gives more heat if the torch accepts it. Check what the torch is rated for.
Safety — soldering pipework is a common cause of house fires
Fires started by a blowtorch on pipework often smoulder inside a wall or floor for hours before they break out. Use a heat mat behind every joint, clear insulation and dust from the cavity, and stay in the area and check the spot again an hour after you finish. Have a fire extinguisher and water to hand.
Ventilate. Burning gas produces carbon monoxide. Never use it in an unventilated space, a loft with no airflow, or near stored fuel or aerosols.
Drain the pipe fully — water in a closed section turns to steam and blows the joint apart. Let everything cool; copper stays hot long after it stops glowing. Wear eye protection and gloves, and keep gas canisters upright, cool and away from children.
