Getting a good rivet

Match the rivet length to the total thickness you are joining — too short and it will not clinch, too long and it stays loose. Rivet packs list a grip range; use it.

Match the rivet material to the workpiece. Steel rivets in aluminium cause galvanic corrosion, which shows up as a white bloom and a failed joint a year later. Use aluminium rivets in aluminium.

Drill the hole to the rivet's specified size — a sloppy hole gives a weak joint. Support the back of thin sheet so it does not dish.

Safety

The mandrel snaps off under load and flies. Wear eye protection every time, and keep the tool pointed away from your face. Collect the spent mandrels; they are sharp and they roll.
