About the capacity figure: "86 pints" and "5,000 sq ft" are the manufacturer's ratings, measured in laboratory test conditions (high temperature and high humidity). Real-world output in a cool basement will be substantially lower, and the area a unit can hold dry depends on your climate, insulation and air movement. Soothes these numbers as a comparison figure, not a promise.
Place the unit on a level surface with clearance around the air intake and outlet, and let it stand upright for several hours before first use if it was shipped lying down.
For continuous drainage the hose must run downhill to a drain. It will not pump uphill unless the unit has a pump, which this model does not.
